Large pools cell culture of fetal calf serum may be contaminated with bovine pathogens, when one or a few calves carried infectious agents. This may cause a biohazard if further processing cannot remove the pathogens, such as bovine viruses or possibly even the causative agent of bovine spongioform encephalopathy. It has been shown that bovine viruses are present in many commercial batches of fetal calf serum and may infect a variety of cell lines from several species. Obviously, bovine pathogens can be introduced into pharmaceuticals if fetal calf serum or derivatives thereof are used during the pharmaceutical production process.
